Born in Cicero, Illinois, Donald F. White graduated from the University of Michigan College of Art and Design with B.S. and M.S. degrees. He was the first African-American to become a registered architect in the state of Michigan. He is a former president of the National Technical Association. He has worked on projects in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Liberia. He also taught architecture at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
